An Eco-Friendly Solution: Pesantren Tebuireng Uses Smokeless Waste Incinerator Technology from UNUSA

Jombang, November 18, 2025 – A team from the Center for Environmental Health of Pesantren (CEHP) at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (UNUSA) installed smokeless waste incinerator technology at the Pesantren Tebuireng Jombang. This step was a follow-up to the visit of Gus Riza Yusuf, a representative of the Islamic boarding school, who had previously come to UNUSA to discuss waste management solutions. Also present at the meeting were CEHP Chair Achmad Syafiuddin, along with the UNUSA Rector and Vice Rector, who both expressed serious concern about the waste problem in the Islamic boarding school environment.

Pesantren Tebuireng has been facing a significant increase in waste volume daily without the support of a proper management system. Waste that is left to accumulate has the potential to cause various health and environmental problems, especially if burned conventionally, which contributes to air pollution. This issue was a primary concern in intensive discussions between the Islamic boarding school and the UNUSA CEHP team, highlighting the need for environmentally friendly solutions to effectively manage waste without harming the surrounding environment.

In-depth discussions led to an innovative solution: the installation of a smokeless incinerator, a research and development initiative at UNUSA. This incinerator technology can cleanly burn waste without producing the air pollution typical of conventional waste incineration. This system is specifically designed to meet the needs of Islamic boarding schools with sufficient capacity to sustainably reduce waste accumulation within the boarding school environment.

Following two weeks of installation and completion, the smokeless incinerator system was ready for use and delivered directly to the Pesantren Tebuireng. The installation is located at the school's waste collection point (TPS), allowing all waste generated to be immediately processed using this modern technology. With this equipment, it is hoped that the Islamic boarding school will be able to manage its waste independently and in an environmentally friendly manner, avoiding the risk of air pollution and reducing the negative impact on the health of students and the surrounding environment.
